So this suit. I've worn it (or pieces of it) several times already. And you know what? I get why people wear them. I just felt so much more...together.
The first time I wore it was at the fundraiser for Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor in Beverly Hills. The parents of one of the girls in College Republicans hosted it, and was nice enough to invite the club. So last Sunday, I wore my suit, ate a delicious brunch, and even spoke with Eric Cantor himself.
This photo was taken before our discussion about Middle East policy. He spent nearly ten minutes with us, which is amazing considering that there were about fifty other people there, all of whom had donated generously for the privilege. He also gave about a twenty minute speech, followed by a question and answer segment. If any of you gets a chance to hear him speak, I highly recommend you take advantage of it - Congressman Cantor is excellent, and very engaging.
I also wore the suit for interviews for two on-campus internships (admissions office intern and tour guide intern). The first interview, I wore the whole suit, which was good, but I no one else in my group interview was wearing the whole thing (sometimes girls were in suit skirts/pants w/o the blazer, or vise versa, but the great part it didn't make me feel overdressed). For the next interview, I wore a pink skirt I already had, a white top, and the charcoal blazer, which was really cute.
The competition is really stiff for those positions, especially because they're looking for diversity in the final group on so many levels, not just racial, but also socioeconomic, geographic, educational, major, and extracurricular. And they already have about 3/4 retention from previous recruiting years, so a lot of it is luck of the draw - if you have whatever specific qualities they happen to be looking for this year.
If I don't get it, though, I'll know it's not because of attire...
